Le renouveau ethnique dans une société plurale - le Canada - a comme points d'ancrage: a question nationale au Québec, la résistance autochtone à la déterritorialisation, l'affirmation de la mémoire immigrée. Au Québec, la réflexion académique sur les ethniques et demeurée périphérique sinon décentrée par la question nationale. Dans cet essai, des interrogations et des jalons de réponses sont esquissées afin d'expliquer ce silence des sciences sociales sur un pan de l'histoire québécoise qui se fait sous nos yeux. Ethnic renewal in a plural society such as Canada shows particular features: the national question in Québec, the native resistance to land dispossession and the affirmation of immigrant memories. In Québec, scholarly research on ethnicity and ethnic relations was until recently a peripheral issue to the national question. In this article, the author tries to explain how and why social scientists have neglected the study of an historical set of relations of Québec society: biographies and memories of immigrants.

La réécriture des identités nationales n'a cessé d'intriguer acteurs et chercheurs depuis deux siècles. La globalisation et l'internationalisation des flux migratoires réinterrogent notre rapport à l'État, à la nation et aux jeux de l'identité qui se profilent dans la société civile. La crise de la modernité ouvre de nouveaux horizons pour repenser la mémoire, la culture et la démocratie. Dans cet excursus, nous cherchons à lire ces mutations et leurs conséquences sur le devenir de l'État-nation dans des sociétés polyethniques et concluons sur la nécessité de sauvegarder les droits des minorités. National identities have been the focus of reflection by social scientists in the last two centuries. However, mass migration and market globalization have produced a vast array of transformations in civil society, the state and the nation ; citizens have to rewrite and rethink their identities. The crisis of modernity could be seen as a « life in fragments », where we ask ourselves about the future of culture, memory and democracy. In this article, we try to discern these transformations and their eventual consequences on the nation-state in polyethnic societies. We conclude by asserting the need to saveguard minorities rights in states and societies.
